8.0 HELPFUL HINTS

Success Hint #1

Always maintain excellent communication with your advisors, especially your main advisor. They provide excellent counsel; however, you must question anything that is unclear until you understand. Your advisors are experts in their fields and, as such, have very demanding schedules. So be sure contact them well in advance to get you some time in the schedule. And, of course, be on time!

Success Hint #2

Plan carefully. Check your deadlines, figure out how much time you want to allot for each step of your research and writing, and then calculate backwards. If you are familiar with Gantt diagrams for project schedule management that illustrate the start and finish dates of the terminal elements and summary elements of a project (your thesis or dissertation), then you already have a sense of what has to be done, planning-wise.

Writing Hint #1

The conventional IMRAD model has been described at length in this thesis manual. To refresh your memory, see 2.3.

When you think about it, the Methods/Methodology section is probably one of the easier parts to put down into writing, and you should be able to describe this even before you obtain any results. Completing this should naturally lead you right into the Results section. You have to collect and analyze your Results before you can even attempt a Discussion of theoretical and practical aspects, and the significance of your findings. Now you are on your way to writing your Conclusions, which really are best written before you write your Introduction that describes that your Conclusions were unknown or unproven. And, of course, how can you summarize your thesis in an Abstract until it is completed?!
